The surgery was situated on the right on entering the Main gate. It contained X ray facilities, Fracture clinic and Eye clinic. A doctor was in attendance there were sub surgeries in the Research and Danger buildings area and at the Fourth gate. Where the Hospital was situated the dispensary was opposite the surgery. The Mortuary was between the surgery and the main gate. Before the advent of the National Health many employees used the doctors at the surgery as their panel doctor. Medical inspector prior to employment and smallpox and tetanus injection's were given. The eye surgery was second to none. The nurse in charge was Sister Ellis on the Arsenal closure she was employed at the Greenwich Hospital. An Ambulance was on stand by at the Fire Station by the Guard House. The Military Hospital (Herbert) at Shooters Hill, was available for any serious injury or for hospitalisation. Workers prior to the closure of the R 0 F 1967 in presenting a sick certificate stating that they were un-fit for work had to present them selves to the surgery when fit to resume to receive a note for there shop management to resume work.

All persons engaged in the Arsenal who have been employed three years continuously and reside within one mile radius of a point equidistant from the main and Plumstead gates of the Royal Arsenal are entitled to Medical aid at their residences should they be unable to attend personally. Men under three years are not entitled to Medical assistance except in case of injury or sudden illness while at work When fit to resume work, they should attend at the Medical Department to have there names withdrawn from the sick list. Injuries any man incapacitated from performing his work through an injury received whilst in execution of duty, or by sickness clearly attributable to the nature of his work. allowed full pay for three months continuously if necessary
